The following are the rules for runner crew access to the Big Mountain and Lambs Canyon Aid Stations. (Note that term “CREW” includes family, friends, pacers, helpers, moral supporter, etc.)
- Only one (1) crew vehicle per runner is allowed at the Big Mountain and Lamb’s Canyon aid stations.
- All runner crew vehicles must display an official race parking pass on the windshield (visible to the aid station parking personnel) in order to enter either the Big Mountain or Lamb’s Canyon aid stations. Each parking pass is specific to either Big Mountain or to Lambs. These passes are obtained from race officials located at the race staging area in the George Washington Park. Typically all of Washington Park will be reserved for support crews, family and friends on race day. An announcement will be made well before the race if there are any changes. The Washington Park race officials will release crews for the Big Mountain aid station 1 hour before their runner is predicted to arrive at Big Mountain. They will release crews for the Lamb’s Canyon aid station at the time their runner leaves the Alexander aid station.
- Pets are NOT ALLOWED at any Wasatch 100 venue including the Pre-Race check-in, Start and the Finish at Soldier Hollow. This is particularly important in Washington Park as well as at Big Mountain, Alexander and Lambs Canyon Aid stations as these spots are located in the Salt Lake Watershed. Salt Lake City takes its water quality seriously and issues citations for pets in these locations.
- Directions to Washington Park: Take Exit 134 (East Canyon) on I-80 Eastbound, turn left, go under freeway to frontage road. Turn right (east) and follow frontage road all the way up past Mountain Dell Golf Course. At the top of the road make a left (north) down into the park. The park has 2 separate areas (Upper and Lower) each with a pavilion, combined 27 tables, 10 BBQ’s, playgrounds, bathrooms and large grass areas for gathering of crews, friends and family, play, food and relaxing.
- Parking passes issued at George Washington Park for Big Mountain and Lamb’s aid stations will allow plenty of time for crews to reach the aid station before their runner. Check in with the volunteers at the park for a specific runner’s schedule and to obtain a parking pass at the appropriate time. After your runner passes through Big Mountain you will have to return to Washington Park for the Lamb’s Canyon parking pass. In addition to checking with the volunteers at the park, crews can access their runner’s in and out times using the runner look-up search engine. There will be a link to the runner look-up on the home page of our website during the race.
- The approximate drive time from George Washington Park to Big Mountain Aid Station is 15 minutes and the approximate drive time to Lamb’s Canyon Aid Station is 5 minutes.
- Big Mountain Aid Station parking: Crew vehicles must park in the area as directed by the aid station personnel. Parking will not be allowed on the Big Mountain pass highway.
- Lamb’s Canyon Aid Station parking: Crew vehicles will be required to travel up the frontage road (north of I-80) and east from the Lamb’s Canyon aid station to the designated turnaround spot approximately one half mile from the aid station and then flip a U-turn and head back (west) toward the aid station, parking along the north (right) side of the frontage road facing the aid station (facing west). Crews will then walk to the aid station to greet and aid their runner. No crew vehicles may park anywhere in the area of the Lamb’s Canyon exit or aid station. Parking is allowed only along the designated frontage roadside.
- Runner crew vehicles must vacate the Big Mountain and Lamb’s Canyon aid station parking areas as soon as their runner departs. This does not apply to the Brighton aid station due to the ample parking available.
- All pacers must travel to the aid station in the runner’s crew vehicle. If a runner has no crew (other than the pacer), the pacer must still obtain a pass if they plan to park the vehicle at the aid station. Either a separate driver or the previous pacer must remove the vehicle after the runner departs from the aid station. If a pacer is simply being dropped off, and a vehicle is not being parked no parking pass is needed.
IN 2016 WE LOST CREW ACCESS TO THE LAMBS AID STATION SITE BECAUSE THESE RULES WERE IGNORED. THE NEXT YEAR WE WERE ABLE TO NEGOTIATE THE RETURN OF THAT AID STATION. WE CANNOT OVEREMPHASIZE THAT COMPLIANCE TO THESE RULES DICTATES WHETHER THE BIG MOUNTAIN AND LAMB’S AID STATIONS CONTINUE TO BE AVAILABLE IN THE FUTURE. PLEASE TAKE TIME TO EDUCATE YOUR PACERS, CREW, FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
OUR PERMITs WITH THE UTAH DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND THE UTAH HIGHWAY PATROL REQUIRE THESE RULES BE FOLLOWED. ANY VIOLATION REQUIRES US TO CONTACT THE UTAH HIGHWAY PATROL FOR ENFORCEMENT.
