Runners take 1.2 to 2.5 hours from Millcreek(Upper Big Water) to Desolation (mile 61.68 to 66.93). The Desolation Lake back country aid station will have limited water and food. The trail is broad and quite an improvement over the previous trails. Walking is even easier and faster. Scenery is sublime in the daylight and stars illuminate the heavens on clear nights. Dog Lake (named for water dogs or salamanders) is just on the right by the trail 3.3 miles up a steady but gentle climb. After a half-mile descent down to Blunder Fork (go left here and back uphill) the long steady climb up to Desolation Lake begins. There is no access here for crews.
